Old village strung along the Alzette east of Clausen — quiet, wooded, and a favourite starting point for city-edge hikes.

Neudorf runs along the Alzette valley east of Clausen, a strung-out village of stone houses, small workshops and one long main street (Rue de Neudorf). It's residential and quiet, with maybe three or four restaurants, a bakery and a scattered cafe scene. The appeal is the walking — from Neudorf you access the forested trails along the Alzette that eventually connect to Cents and Sandweiler, all inside the city boundary but feeling entirely rural.

By 9pm the village is silent. There's no nightlife, no shopping. Stay here if you want a walking-focused base within the city — early morning trail runs directly from your door — and can accept a 15-minute bus into anywhere lively. Prices are low (€78-€121). Skip if you want the classic Luxembourg city sights on your doorstep. Rives de Clausen is a 20-minute walk downriver for weekend nights.

Rue Emile Metz, the through-road that shadows Rue de Neudorf on the valley's far bank, carries most of the commuter traffic and is worth avoiding as an address even though it looks identical to the quiet lane on a map. The two roads run parallel for most of the village's length but feel like different places — one has birdsong, the other has delivery vans from 6:30am. Ask specifically for the river side when booking anything here.

Families with older kids and anyone training for a hike or a race do well in Neudorf — the valley path is effectively a free, traffic-free gym. Couples wanting restaurant choice or a lively evening should base in Grund or Clausen instead and treat Neudorf as a day trip. There is no reason to come here without intending to walk; without that, it's simply a quiet suburb a bus ride from everything.

Where to stay in Neudorf

Two small hotels and a handful of guesthouses along Rue de Neudorf. Expect €82-€121 in high season (May-September) and closer to €78-€95 in winter, when several of the smaller guesthouses cut rates to fill rooms. The best rooms overlook the Alzette or the wooded slopes above it; ask for these specifically rather than assuming. Avoid anything on the main through-road (Rue Emile Metz) for morning traffic noise — it starts early and carries through breakfast. This is one of the areas where a rural-feeling B&B works better than a hotel — several period farmhouses have been converted, and booking one directly through Rue de Neudorf listings rather than a big chain aggregator tends to land the better rooms.

Getting around & the essentials

Neudorf to Clausen along the Alzette

Start at the west end of Rue de Neudorf, near the village bakery, and drop down to the signed Alzette footpath. Follow the river west through the wooded valley, passing beneath the old stone road bridge and a run of allotment gardens, until the industrial-heritage brewery buildings of Rives de Clausen come into view. Roughly 30-35 minutes flat throughout. Return the same way along the river or take bus 9 back up to Rue de Neudorf.

Bus 9 runs the length of Rue de Neudorf to Gare Centrale in about 20 minutes via Clausen, free like all public transport in Luxembourg. Bus 12 also serves Neudorf on a slightly different routing through the valley. From the airport, take bus 29 to Cents then change to bus 9, about 40 minutes total including the wait. There is no tram and no train station in the village. Inside Neudorf everything sits along one main street, so walking is fine for local errands, but the valley trails — not the bus network — are the real reason to base here. A taxi from the airport runs roughly €35-€40 if you'd rather skip the change.
