Esch-sur-Alzette

The country's second city and former steel capital — university, indie music venues, Belval blast furnaces and half the price of the capital.

Esch is Luxembourg's second city, 20 minutes south of the capital by train, and it has none of the polished tourist gloss — which is exactly why it's interesting. The former steel plant at Belval has been converted into the University of Luxembourg campus, and the two enormous rusting blast furnaces (Hauts Fourneaux) are now walk-around industrial monuments with a free open-air lift up one of them. Rue de l'Alzette in the town centre is a long pedestrianised shopping street with cheap eats and student energy.

By 9pm the Rockhal music venue at Belval or the small bars along Boulevard J.F. Kennedy are where things happen. Esch was a 2022 European Capital of Culture and some of the projects — the Konschthal art space, the Bridderhaus artist residency — are worth an afternoon. Stay here if you want lower prices (€65-€104) and the industrial-heritage side of Luxembourg. Trains to the capital run every 15 minutes.

During term time the town skews young: students from the Belval campus fill the cafes on Rue de l'Alzette and the cheap Portuguese diners around Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, and the mood is closer to a provincial French university town than to anything in central Luxembourg City. Weekends are quieter in the centre but livelier at Belval, where the Rockhal calendar and the campus bars pull a crowd that mostly arrives by train and leaves the same night rather than staying over.

It suits travellers who want to see the industrial side of the country, who don't mind a plainer streetscape than the Old Town, and who are happy commuting in for anything upmarket. It doesn't suit anyone wanting boutique hotels, fine dining or a walkable historic core — for that, base in Luxembourg City and treat Esch as a half-day trip instead.

Where to stay in Esch-sur-Alzette

A dozen small and mid-sized hotels cluster around Place de la Résistance and near Esch train station. Expect €65-€113 midweek, dropping toward €65-€85 outside university term and rising slightly during Rockhal concert weekends. The best streets are Rue de la Libération and Boulevard J.F. Kennedy — walkable to the pedestrian centre and to the station within 5-10 minutes. Avoid anything near the Route de Belvaux for suburban isolation, since it's a poorly lit 20-minute walk with no late buses back. Belval itself has a couple of modern hotels next to the blast furnaces at €95-€139, ideal if you're going to Rockhal or want to be inside the university campus rather than the old town centre. Book central Esch for value, Belval only if the concert or campus is the point of the trip.

Getting around & the essentials

Town centre to Belval blast furnaces

From Esch station, walk north up Rue de la Libération through the pedestrian centre and Place de la Résistance, passing Place de l'Hôtel de Ville and its Saturday market stalls, then take a bus or the short train to Belval-Université. Walk past the Möllerei visitor centre and through the former steelworks site to the base of the Hauts Fourneaux and climb the free staircase. About 90 minutes with the train transfer.

Trains from Luxembourg Gare Centrale to Esch run every 15 minutes, take 20 minutes, and are free under the country's fare-free public transport scheme. Belval-Université station serves the university and blast furnace site — one stop before Esch on the same line, about 3 minutes' extra travel. Inside Esch, buses and free city trains connect Belval to the centre, and the pedestrian core around Rue de l'Alzette is entirely walkable in 10-15 minutes end to end. From Findel Airport, bus 16 to Gare then the train to Esch is about 55 minutes total, and a taxi direct runs roughly €45-€55.
