Grund is where locals actually drink. Down in the gorge, reached by the free Pfaffenthal panoramic lift from Plateau du Saint-Esprit or a steep walk down Montée du Grund, it's a cluster of stone houses along the Alzette with maybe eight bars and a handful of restaurants. Scott's Pub on Bisserwee has been the anchor for 30 years; Melusina next door does a fancier crowd. By 9pm on a Friday the riverside terraces are three-deep.
The catch: it's tiny, and if you sleep here you’ll hear it. Only stay in Grund if you’re going out. Otherwise base yourself up in Ville Haute and walk down for dinner. The Neumünster Abbey cultural centre runs free lunchtime concerts most Wednesdays — check ccrn.lu. The Natural History Museum on Rue Münster is €4 and quietly one of the better small museums in the country.
By day the mood flips entirely. Old washhouses along the riverbank sit quiet, fishermen work the Alzette below the Stierchen footbridge, and the only noise is church bells from Saint-Jean-du-Grund. The Wenzel Wall — a thousand years of fortification stacked into the cliffside — looms over the rooftops, and from the Chemin de la Corniche above you get the postcard shot of Grund without paying anything or booking a tour. Come before 11am if you want the lanes to yourself.
It suits groups wanting a night out within stumbling distance of decent beer, and travellers who want one atmospheric dinner in the gorge before retreating uphill. It does not suit anyone chasing a quiet week, families with young kids who need an early bedtime, or drivers — there is nowhere sane to park. If that describes you, sleep in Ville Haute or Kirchberg and treat Grund as a two-hour excursion, not a base.

Options are limited — maybe four proper hotels and a handful of B&Bs. Hotel Parc Beaux-Arts has an outpost here and expect €147-€199 in high season, dropping to roughly €120-€150 between November and March when the terraces empty out. The best streets are Rue Münster (quieter, near the abbey) and Rue Plaetis. Avoid rooms directly above Scott's or on Bisserwee unless you’re the one making the noise until 1am on weekends. Parking is basically impossible — the free lift and lots up top are the workaround. Book Rue Münster first; if that's full, treat Grund as a night out from a Ville Haute hotel rather than settling for a room over the bars.

Alzette riverside to Clausen
From Neumünster Abbey, follow the Alzette north along Rue Münster past the old stone bridges, under the Passerelle du Grund, then continue on the river path into Clausen. You’ll pass the Mousel brewery buildings before emerging at Rives de Clausen. Roughly one hour flat walking, then a steep climb back up or the lift. Bring water in summer — there's no shade for the last stretch and no shops open before the bars start their evening service.
From the airport, take bus 16 or 29 to the city centre (about 20 minutes, €2 covers two hours on all public transport), then transfer toward Plateau du Saint-Esprit for the free Pfaffenthal lift down — total journey around 40 minutes door to door. From the train station, bus 9 or 14 reaches Plateau du Saint-Esprit in roughly 10 minutes, then the lift takes 30 seconds. From Ville Haute, walk down Montée du Grund (5 minutes, steep) or use the lift. There's no tram down here. Getting out late at night: buses stop around midnight; walk up via the lift (runs until 1am) or budget €10-€13 for a taxi back to your hotel.
