Hollerich

Old industrial district southwest of the station — Rockhal-adjacent bars, Rotondes cultural centre, and the city's alt-nightlife.

Hollerich is the old industrial belt on the south-western edge of the city, now a slow-motion regeneration project. Rue de Hollerich runs southwest from the station, and along it you find Melusina Hollerich, De Gudde Wëllen, and the D:Qliq bar — the closest thing Luxembourg City has to an indie music scene. The Rotondes cultural centre in two converted railway roundhouses on Place des Rotondes runs concerts, a decent restaurant and a bar terrace that's genuinely great in summer.

By day it's mixed — offices, warehouses, some grim stretches near the rail tracks. By 10pm on a Thursday it's the one part of the city with people actually queuing for a venue. Stay here for cheap-ish hotels (€82-€121), easy station access and the alt-crowd. Skip it if you want polished tourist infrastructure or you’re travelling with kids — some blocks are visibly rough.

Weekday lunches lean cheap and unglamorous: canteens and snack bars around Rue de Bonnevoie and the lower end of Rue de Hollerich serve Portuguese and Cape Verdean plates to warehouse and office workers for €8-€12, a reminder that this end of the city has always housed Luxembourg's immigrant labour rather than its tourists. There's no view, no old-town charm, and nobody pretends otherwise — you come for the price and the after-dark scene, not for photographs.

The hotel stock here is functional rather than boutique — plain doubles, reliable Wi-Fi, no spa. That suits travellers arriving on a late train who want to drop bags and walk straight to a gig, and it suits anyone on a budget who doesn't mind a 15-minute walk into the old town. It suits nobody chasing a romantic weekend or a quiet lie-in near a construction site.

Where to stay in Hollerich

Cluster of budget and mid-range hotels near Place de la Gare and along Route d’Esch. Expect €82-€130 for a plain double in the shoulder months, dropping toward €75 in the quiet stretches of January and November, and pushing past €140 during conference weeks or the August Schueberfouer fair when the whole city tightens up. Rue d’Anvers and Rue de Hollerich have the newer boutique conversions. Avoid streets immediately west of the rail line (Rue de Bouillon, Rue de la Fonderie) for a slightly rougher feel at night. Anything within 500m of Place des Rotondes gives you tram T1 access and a walk to bars — book on that stretch first and only look further out if it's sold out.

Getting around & the essentials

Rotondes to the Adolphe Bridge

Start at Place des Rotondes, walk north up Rue de Hollerich past the alt-venues and warehouses, cross into Avenue de la Liberté and continue up to the Adolphe Bridge for the classic Pétrusse gorge view. About 35 minutes, flat until the final approach to the bridge. Pause at the small park by Place de Metz if you want a bench and a slower look at the gorge before pushing on to Ville Haute.

Hollerich is a 10-15 minute walk from Gare Centrale, so you inherit the full train network. Tram T1 stops at Place de l’Etoile and Place des Rotondes for direct free rides to the old town (5 min) and Kirchberg (15 min). Bus 12 runs the length of Rue de Hollerich. From the airport, bus 16 to Gare then tram or walk, about 35 minutes total, and the whole ride is free since Luxembourg scrapped public transport fares. A taxi from the airport runs roughly €35-€40 and takes 20 minutes with light traffic.
