Ettelbruck sits 30km north of Luxembourg City where the Alzette meets the Sûre, and it's the practical rail junction for anyone heading into the Ardennes. Trains from the capital arrive every 30 minutes (25 minutes journey, free). The town itself is modest — pedestrianised Grand-Rue with cafes and shops, the small General Patton Museum on Rue Dr Klein commemorating the Battle of the Bulge liberation (€7), and a Saturday morning market on Place Marie-Adélaïde.

By 9pm Ettelbruck's fairly quiet. A handful of restaurants on Grand-Rue and near the station stay open. Choose it as a launchpad — the bus to Vianden Castle is 25 minutes from the station, Diekirch is 5 minutes by train, and Clervaux is 35 minutes. Prices are lower than the capital (€74-€113). Skip if you want city atmosphere. The Ardennes proper start 10km north — rolling wooded hills, castles and hiking trails.

The station itself is worth a glance in passing — it's the second-busiest in the country and the platform boards read like a gazetteer of everywhere you actually want to go: Diekirch, Wiltz, Troisvierges, Vianden by bus. Grand-Rue runs about 400m from the station to Place Marie-Adélaïde and is entirely walkable in under ten minutes, past bakeries and a couple of banks, so there's no need to book anything central for the sake of proximity.

Families tend to like Ettelbruck more than solo travellers expecting nightlife — the riverside paths and the market are genuinely pleasant, and the museum gives kids a concrete history hook before a castle day. Couples chasing bars and late dinners should base in Luxembourg City instead and treat this as a half-day stop or a one-night stopover before pushing north. Either way, pack for rain — the Ardennes microclimate is wetter than the capital.

Where to stay in Ettelbruck

Half a dozen small and mid-sized hotels near the station and along Grand-Rue. Expect €74-€113 in high season (May-September), dropping to €61-€90 in winter when demand is thin. The best options are close to the station for easy morning departures to Vianden or Clervaux — anywhere within the Grand-Rue to Place Marie-Adélaïde stretch keeps you a five-minute walk from both the platforms and the market. Rural gîtes in surrounding villages (Feulen, Erpeldange) run €61-€95 and give you a countryside base if you have a car, though you'll lose the walk-to-everything convenience. Avoid rooms fronting the N7 through-road for traffic noise — ask specifically for a courtyard or Grand-Rue-facing room when booking, since the difference in sleep quality is significant.

Getting around & the essentials

Ettelbruck to Erpeldange along the Sûre

From the Patton monument on Place Marie-Adélaïde, follow signs to the Sûre riverside path, walk west toward Erpeldange village passing meadows and small woods. About 75 minutes one way, all flat. Return by bus 100 or the same path. Pushchairs and bikes manage the surface without difficulty, and there's a bench roughly every 15 minutes if you want to break the walk up.

Ettelbruck is the country's second rail hub. Direct trains from Luxembourg Gare every 30 minutes, 25-minute journey, free. Onward trains north to Clervaux and Troisvierges (Belgian border). Bus 570 to Vianden every 30 minutes, 25 minutes journey. Bus 100 to Diekirch, Bourscheid and Esch-sur-Sûre. From Findel Airport, bus 16 to Luxembourg Gare then train, about 55 minutes total. Once in town, everything worth reaching on foot — Grand-Rue, the museum, the market square — sits within a 10-minute walk of the station, so a car is only useful for the surrounding villages and gîtes.
