Who it suits

Vianden sits on the Our river against the German border, dominated by its restored 11th-century castle. It's the most-photographed town in Luxembourg and, at 1,500 residents, small enough to walk end-to-end in 15 minutes. It suits couples wanting a romantic base, families (chairlift, castle, small museums), and anyone using Vianden as a day-trip springboard into the Éislek.

It doesn’t suit anyone who dislikes tourists — Vianden is busy from Easter to October, and the main street can feel packed on weekends. Winter is a different, quieter town.

Price and staying overnight

Hotels run 95-170 EUR for a double, with the Auberge Aal Veinen and the Hotel Belle-Vue among the classic addresses. Rates drop notably from November to March, and rise for the medieval festival weekends in August.

Walkable: the castle (10 minutes uphill from the main street), Victor Hugo's House museum, the covered wooden bridge over the Our, the pumped-storage power plant visitor centre, and the chairlift up to the castle viewpoint. The valley trail follows the Our river north into wooded countryside.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is one night in Vianden enough?

For most visitors, yes. Staying overnight lets you see the castle after the day-trippers leave, which is the best experience.

How do I get to Vianden without a car?

Take the train to Ettelbruck (25 minutes from Luxembourg City), then bus 570 to Vianden (30-35 minutes). All free.
