Who it suits
Gare, the quarter around Luxembourg's Belle Époque train station, is the practical base. It suits travellers arriving by train from Brussels, Paris or Trier, anyone doing day trips to Vianden or Echternach (both start with a bus from here), and budget-conscious visitors who don’t mind a 15-minute uphill walk to Ville Haute — or a two-minute tram ride.
It doesn’t suit anyone chasing charm. Streets immediately south and east of the station (around Rue de Strasbourg and Rue Joseph Junck) are the city's grittiest, with visible sex work, cheap kebab shops and a small drug scene. Nothing dangerous, just not scenic.
Price and access
Hotel density is high: Ibis, Novotel, Park Inn, Best Western, Mercure, plus older independents. Doubles run 100-160 EUR, saving 40-70 EUR versus Ville Haute. Avenue de la Liberté, running north from the station toward the Adolphe Bridge, is the most pleasant strip.
Walkable: Gare Centrale (obviously), the Pétrusse valley park, the Adolphe Bridge, the Villa Vauban museum in 20 minutes, and the tram at the front door. Ville Haute is one tram stop or a 15-minute walk uphill via Avenue de la Liberté.
