Who it suits
Ettelbruck sits at the confluence of the Alzette, Sûre and Wark rivers, and is the main interchange for trains and buses into the Éislek (Ardennes). It suits travellers touring the north without a car — Vianden, Diekirch, Clervaux and Wiltz are all reachable from here — and WW2 historians visiting the General Patton Memorial Museum.
It doesn’t suit anyone looking for a picturesque town base. Ettelbruck is functional rather than pretty; the town centre was rebuilt after wartime damage and has a workaday feel.
Price and connections
Hotels are limited and priced 90-140 EUR for a double — cheaper than the capital, similar to Diekirch. The Hotel Central is the largest option; a couple of smaller places cover the rest.
Walkable: General Patton Memorial Museum, the central Place Marie-Adélaïde, and the train station. Buses to Vianden, Echternach and Clervaux depart from the station forecourt. Trains to Luxembourg City run twice hourly in 25-30 minutes.

Yes, especially without a car. Bus 570 runs regularly to Vianden and the CFL rail network reaches Clervaux and Wiltz directly.
What's the Patton Memorial Museum about?
It covers the Battle of the Bulge and Luxembourg's liberation in 1944-45. General Patton is buried at the American Cemetery in Hamm, near the capital.
