Who it suits
Echternach, on the Sûre river against the German border, was founded in 698 around the abbey of Saint Willibrord and is the country's oldest town. It suits hikers using the Mullerthal Trail (which loops out of town in three separate routes), cyclists on the Sûre valley path, and cultural visitors coming for the Pentecost Dancing Procession — a UNESCO-listed ritual that fills the streets each spring.
It doesn’t suit anyone whose main goal is Luxembourg City. The bus takes 50 minutes and there's no rail link. It's also quieter in winter, when many trailside guesthouses close.
Price and walkability
Doubles run 95-160 EUR at hotels including the Bel Air, the Grand Hotel, and various guesthouses. Youth Hostel dorms are 26 EUR. Rates spike sharply during the Pentecost weekend — book six months out.
Walkable: the Basilica of Saint Willibrord, the Roman-era villa remains, the medieval market square with its 15th-century Denzelt building, the lake (Echternach lake, 2 km loop), and the Mullerthal Trail heads. The German town of Echternacherbrück is 5 minutes across the bridge.

When is the Dancing Procession?
Pentecost Tuesday, the day after Whit Monday. Tens of thousands of pilgrims and spectators fill the town — accommodation books out well in advance.
How hard are the Mullerthal Trails from Echternach?
Route 1 (36 km, splittable into stages) and Route 2 (37 km) both leave from town. Day-sized loops of 10-15 km are the more common approach for casual hikers.
