Who it suits

Diekirch lies on the Sûre river, 3 km east of Ettelbruck. It's compact, prettier than its neighbour, and known for the National Museum of Military History (dedicated to the Battle of the Bulge) and the Diekirch brewery, one of Luxembourg's two main beer producers. It suits WW2 historians, cyclists on the national network which follows the Sûre valley, and travellers wanting a quiet northern base with genuine character.

It doesn’t suit anyone in a hurry to see Luxembourg City — the train adds 30-35 minutes each way. Nightlife is minimal.

Price and access

A few small hotels and guesthouses at 90-135 EUR, including the Hotel du Parc and the Herckmans. Rates dip further in winter.

Walkable: the Musée National d’Histoire Militaire, the Roman mosaic in the underground vault of the old church, the pedestrian Rue de l'Église, the Sûre riverside path, and the Deiwelselter (Devil's Altar) megalith on the wooded hill above town. Trains to Luxembourg City run hourly in 45 minutes with a change at Ettelbruck.

Good to know

Questions, answered

How does Diekirch compare to Ettelbruck as a base?

Prettier and quieter, but slightly less connected. Both are 10 minutes apart by train or bus, so you can use either.

Can I tour the Diekirch brewery?

Visits are limited and require booking ahead through the brewery's website. There's an on-site tap for tastings.
