Where to stay in Bonnevoie

A residential district south of the station with doubles 30-50 EUR below Gare and a real neighbourhood feel.

Who it suits

Bonnevoie stretches south and east of Gare Centrale, a working- and middle-class quarter with Portuguese bakeries, Cape Verdean corner shops and the city's public swimming pool. It suits longer stays, travellers on modest budgets, and anyone who wants to see how residents actually live. The Youth Hostel on Rue du Fort Olisy is here, and a couple of small hotels.

It doesn’t suit anyone wanting sights on their doorstep — there are none. It's also poorly connected to Kirchberg without changing buses, and the 20-minute walk to Ville Haute crosses the less appealing side of the station.

Price and getting around

Doubles at 85-130 EUR are the norm; the Youth Hostel offers dorm beds at 26 EUR and private rooms from 60 EUR. That's the cheapest sleep in the city short of camping.

Walkable: Bonnevoie market on Wednesdays, the municipal swimming pool, and Gare Centrale in 10-15 minutes. Bus 15 and 29 run frequently to Hamilius. Kirchberg needs a change at the station — allow 30 minutes door to door.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is Bonnevoie a good base for a first-time visitor?

Only if budget is tight. For a two- or three-night trip, Gare or Ville Haute wastes less time.

Where do locals eat in Bonnevoie?

Portuguese grill houses along Rue de Bonnevoie serve half-chickens with rice and beans for 12-15 EUR, and the Wednesday market has cheap lunch stalls.
