When to visit Luxembourg: a month-by-month guide

The sweet spots

Late April to mid-June: castles fully open, Mullerthal in fresh green, temperatures 15-22°C, hotel rates 20% below peak. Early September to mid-October: Moselle harvest season, vineyards in colour, ideal hiking weather, Riesling festivals in Grevenmacher and Wormeldange. Late November to 23 December: the Wënter Wonder Christmas markets across Place d\'Armes, Place de la Constitution and Place Guillaume II — genuinely charming, three markets, free entry.

The months I avoid

January and February: cold (0-5°C), grey, castles on reduced hours (Vianden 10-4, closed Mondays). Hotel rates only fall 10-15% — not enough to justify the weather. Late July to mid-August: EU institutions on holiday, some restaurants close, Vianden mobbed for the medieval festival (great if you plan for it, terrible if you don\'t). Book by April or accept rural gîtes only.

Weather realities

It rains. Luxembourg gets 800 mm a year spread across all months — pack a proper jacket even in July. Snow is possible December-February but rarely settles in the city; the Ardennes north do get proper snow cover 2-3 weeks a year.
