Ville Haute area guide for first-time visitors

The Old Town plateau is where 80% of visitors sleep and eat, so knowing its four sub-zones saves you 20 minutes of confused walking each day.

What Ville Haute actually is

Ville Haute sits on a sandstone cliff 60 metres above the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers, ringed by the casemates — Luxembourg\'s UNESCO-listed cliff fortifications. It\'s tiny: roughly a 15-minute walk end to end. The four sub-zones are Place d\'Armes (restaurants and buskers), Place Guillaume II (city hall and the Saturday market), the Grand Ducal Palace quarter, and the Chemin de la Corniche walk. Sleeping here means everything is on foot.

Where to stay

Le Place d\'Armes (€277), Hotel Simoncini (€130), Hotel Vauban (€113) and Hotel Français (€139) are the main options — Ville Haute has fewer hotels than you\'d expect because the buildings are protected. Rooms are small by international standards; ask about the view because a courtyard room in a 17th-century townhouse gets no light.

Eating and drinking

Am Tiirmschen (Judd mat Gaardebounen — smoked pork with broad beans, the national dish, around €21) is the tourist-friendly traditional pick. Chiggeri does modern bistro at fair prices. Skip Place d\'Armes chain terraces and walk two blocks to Rue du Saint-Esprit for better food at the same price. Konrad Café on Rue du Nord is the reliable coffee stop.
