The Mullerthal Trail\'s best sections, ranked

The 112-km "Little Switzerland" trail is Luxembourg\'s best walk — but only 3 of its 12 sections deserve a whole day.

Sandstone rock formations on the Mullerthal Trail

The top three sections

Route 2 Section B (Berdorf to Beaufort, 15 km): the famous one, with the Schiessentümpel waterfall, the Wolfsschlucht gorge, and staircases carved into 30-metre sandstone walls. 5 hours. Route 2 Section A (Echternach to Berdorf, 14 km): more open, passes the Aesbach valley and Perekop rock. Route 3 Section (Berdorf to Consdorf, 12 km): the quietest, with the best moss forests.

Logistics

Base in Echternach or Berdorf. Trains from Luxembourg City reach Ettelbruck; buses continue to both towns (all free). The tourism office in Echternach hands out proper maps for €3. Wear grippy shoes — the sandstone is slick after rain, and it rains often. Bring 2 litres of water; there are no shops on the trail itself, only in the villages.

Where to sleep

Hotel Bel Air Echternach (€121), Hotel Kinnen Berdorf (€104, hikers\' hotel), or the youth hostel in Echternach (€39 dorm, private doubles €61). Vianden is 30 minutes away by car — combining a castle night and a Mullerthal night is the classic weekend.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Can I do it as a day trip from Luxembourg City?

Yes for Section B — take the 6:45am train, hike 5 hours, back by 7pm. Tight but doable.

Any easy family section?

Route B1 near Consdorf — 6 km loop with the Kuelscheier crevasse, kids love it.
