The route
The Route du Vin runs from Wasserbillig in the north to Schengen in the south, hugging the Moselle. Six main wine villages matter: Ahn, Wormeldange, Ehnen, Grevenmacher, Remich and Schengen. Base in Remich (best food, biggest town, boat trips) or Ehnen (prettiest, one Michelin restaurant). Hotels: Domaine La Forêt (€130), Hotel Saint-Nicolas (€139), or the excellent B&Bs above cellars for €69-€95.
The cellars worth booking
Domaine Alice Hartmann in Wormeldange — arguably the country\'s top producer, €22 for four wines including Pinot Noir. Bernard-Massard in Grevenmacher for Crémant (Luxembourg\'s sparkling), €16, includes cellar tour. Caves St Martin in Remich, cut into the cliff, €13. Sunnen-Hoffmann in Remerschen for biodynamic, €17. Book ahead — most cellars run only two tastings a day.
What to actually drink
Riesling is king — bone-dry, mineral, better than most German Mosels at the same price (€13-€22 a bottle at the cellar). Auxerrois is the local speciality and criminally underrated. Crémant de Luxembourg is 60% of production and often outperforms Champagne at €16. Skip Rivaner unless it\'s from a top producer.
