Day 1: Capital on foot and tram
You need nothing but your legs and the T1 tram. Do the Old Town walking route in the morning (Bock, Corniche, Grund), tram to Kirchberg after lunch for Mudam and the Philharmonie forecourt, and end the day with drinks in Clausen at the Rives de Clausen arches. Sleep in Ville Haute or the Gare, both walkable to the station for tomorrow's train.
Day 2: Vianden by rail and bus
Train from Gare Centrale to Ettelbruck at 08:47 (35 minutes, hourly), then bus 570 direct to Vianden (25 minutes, half-hourly). You’re at the castle by 10:30. Castle, chairlift, lunch, Victor Hugo house, back on the 17:15 bus. Total transport cost: zero. This is the single best no-car day in the country.
Alternative: swap Vianden for Echternach — bus 110 from the capital's Gare Centrale runs direct in about 50 minutes, half-hourly. Basilica, old town, and the start of the Mullerthal Trail sections 1 and 2 all begin at the abbey.
Day 3: Moselle without wheels
This is the trickier one. Take bus 175 from the capital to Remich (about 55 minutes, hourly), which puts you on the river. Caves St. Martin is a 15-minute walk from the bus stop. From Remich the 450 bus runs north along the wine road to Ehnen, Wormeldange, Grevenmacher — hourly, and you can hop off at each village. Boat cruises on the MS Princesse Marie-Astrid run Remich to Grevenmacher April to September (15-25 euros, a genuinely pleasant way to move between villages).
Return via Grevenmacher or Wasserbillig with train back to the capital. It works, but plan around the bus timetable rather than showing up and hoping.
Questions, answered
Is public transport really 100% free?
Yes, since 1 March 2020. Trams, buses and second-class regional trains nationwide, for residents and visitors alike. First-class train seats and international routes are the only paid exceptions.
Are there any regions I can’t reach without a car?
Bourscheid Castle, the deep Mullerthal trails and some Ardennes villages are technically reachable but connections are hourly and involve waits. If you want those, rent a car for one day and stay carless for the rest.
