What actually happens
National Day (Groussherzogsgebuertsdag) marks the Grand Duke's official birthday, and it's the one day of the year Luxembourg City empties its neighbourhoods into the centre. The main events run 22-23 June. On the evening of the 22nd there's a torchlit parade through Ville Haute, fireworks over the Pétrusse valley from around 23:00, and free concerts and street parties from Place Clairefontaine down to Grund that go past midnight.
The 23rd itself is a public holiday. There's a Te Deum service at Notre-Dame Cathedral in the morning, a military parade along Avenue de la Liberté around 11:00, and the Grand Ducal family appears on the balcony of the Palace. Shops close, most restaurants open at least for lunch, and the crowds thin by late afternoon as locals recover.
Booking and prices
This is the tightest hotel night of the year — tighter than New Year's Eve or Christmas. Central four-stars in Ville Haute run €300-€400 for the night of 22 June and require 2 or 3 night minimums. Kirchberg hotels also fill because tram access to the fireworks is easy. Book by early May if you want anything walkable to the centre. By early June you’ll be looking at €200+ options in Esch-sur-Alzette or Ettelbruck and commuting in by train.
If you didn’t book ahead, an alternative is to base yourself in Trier (about 50 minutes by train) and come in for the evening — trains run late on National Day eve specifically to handle the crowds. Bring a jacket even if the day was warm; the fireworks viewing on the Corniche gets breezy after dark.
Questions, answered
Where's the best fireworks viewing spot?
The Chemin de la Corniche gets crowded but has the classic view. The Pfaffenthal lift terrace is quieter and equally good if you arrive by 22:00.
Is 23 June itself worth staying for?
The parade and Te Deum are formal and short. Most visitors do the 22nd evening and check out on the 23rd — the day itself is quieter than the eve.
