Luxembourg's Industrial Heritage Route: A Full-Day Itinerary

Morning: Belval and Esch-sur-Alzette

Take the train from the capital to Belval-Université (25 minutes, free). The site is unmissable: two enormous blast furnaces from the Arbed steelworks, shut in 1997 and preserved intact when the campus was built around them. Furnace A is open for climbing April to October (free, 45 minutes). The Massenoire building hosts the Cité des Sciences visitor centre — small but well done.

Walk or tram five minutes to Esch-sur-Alzette centre for lunch on Rue de l’Alzette. This was European Capital of Culture in 2022 and the town has visibly reinvested — good bakeries, decent brasseries, a functional urban feel that the guidebooks miss.

Afternoon: Rumelange and Fond-de-Gras

From Esch, bus or drive 15 minutes to Rumelange. The Musée National des Mines is a real iron ore mine you enter on a small underground train, with guided descents at 14:00 and 15:30 (10 euros, closed Mondays). Miners who worked here run some of the tours. Warm layer required — it's 10°C underground year-round.

If you have energy left, drive 20 minutes west to Fond-de-Gras, an open-air industrial museum with a running steam railway (the Train 1900) on summer Sundays. Otherwise train back to the capital by 18:30.

Context and where to sleep

The red rock of the Minett — iron-rich soil that gave Luxembourg the world's second-largest steel industry per capita by 1913 — is what paid for the capital's postwar prosperity. Sleep in Esch itself (Hôtel Mercure Esch-Belval sits under the blast furnaces) if you want to see the site lit up at night; it's genuinely cinematic.
