Why May works
May is when I’d send a first-time visitor. Highs sit at 17-20°C, the Alzette valley is fully green, everything is open, and rates haven’t hit the summer peak. A Ville Haute four-star that will run €230 in late June sits at €160-€180 in the second week of May. Weekends are slightly more expensive than weekdays but the gap is small. Kirchberg is still full of business travellers Monday-Thursday, so consider Grund or Clausen for weekday stays.
Daylight is generous — sunrise before 06:00, sunset near 21:00 by month end. Rain is possible but usually as short showers rather than day-long grey. This is prime Mullerthal hiking weather too; the sandstone trails are dry and the beech forests are luminous green.
What happens in May
1 May is Labour Day and a public holiday — shops close, museums keep normal hours, restaurants stay open. 9 May is Europe Day, marked at the European institutions on Kirchberg with open days you can visit for free (bring ID). Ascension and Whit Monday are also holidays that fall in May most years, and they trigger long-weekend price spikes similar to Easter.
The ING Night Marathon runs on a Saturday in late May or early June, with a course that loops Kirchberg, Ville Haute and Grund. Hotels within 2 km of the start sell out well in advance and many streets close from about 17:00 to 01:00. If you’re not running, it's actually fun to watch — bring a jacket for the late finish.

Usually the second weekend, when no public holidays fall and the marathon hasn’t happened yet. Rates can dip below weekday levels.
Do I need to book Mullerthal accommodation ahead in May?
For weekends yes, especially in Berdorf and Beaufort where beds are limited. Weekdays are usually walk-in.
