Prices and pace
February is barely more expensive than January. Business demand is back in Kirchberg by mid-month, which nudges weekday rates up to €130-€150, but weekends stay cheap because leisure tourism is still hibernating. Ville Haute doubles at properties like Hôtel Simoncini or Le Place d’Armes weekend rates sit at €140-€170 — perhaps 40% off summer peaks. Grund guesthouses run €95-€120.
Weather is the coldest of the year on average. Highs of 4-6°C, lows around 0°C, and February has the highest chance of a proper snow day, though it rarely sticks for long. Daylight stretches from 6 hours at month start to nearly 11 by month end. Bring layers and something waterproof — freezing drizzle is more common than snow.
Buergsonndeg and Carnival
The first Sunday of Lent is Buergsonndeg, when villages across Luxembourg light bonfires on the hills to burn winter away. It's a genuinely old tradition, still observed in places like Remich, Echternach and much of the Mullerthal. Ask your hotel — many can point you to the closest one, usually lit around 18:00-19:00.
Carnival (Fuesent) runs the week before Ash Wednesday. It's less wild than Cologne but Diekirch and Remich both hold Sunday parades that draw a few thousand people. Local bakeries sell Verwurelter (fried dough twists) throughout Carnival week. The casemates remain closed. Vianden Castle stays on winter hours. Most of the Moselle wineries are shut for tastings until March.

Should I rent a car in February?
Only if you’re chasing bonfires or castles beyond Vianden. The city and Moselle are fine by train, and roads can be icy in the Ardennes.
Is Carnival worth planning around?
Not really — it's charming but small. Come for the cheap rooms and add Carnival if the dates align.
