Day 1: North from the capital
Leave the capital at 09:00 heading north on the A7. First stop Mersch (30 minutes) for a quick look at the ruined keep in the town centre — free, 20 minutes. Continue to Larochette, a small 11th-century hillfort above the village (5 euros, one hour). Lunch in Larochette at Auberge Op der Bleech.
Afternoon: Bourscheid Castle, the largest medieval site in the country, dramatically sited above the Sûre (7 euros, 90 minutes with the audio guide). End the day in Vianden — arrive by 17:00, walk up to the castle at golden hour and eat at Aal Veinen. Sleep at Hôtel Heintz on Grand-Rue.
Day 2: The far north and back
09:00 Vianden Castle proper — the country's showpiece, restored to its 11th-to-14th century form. Two hours minimum. Then drive 40 minutes northwest to Clervaux. The castle houses The Family of Man and a small model-castle museum (combined 8 euros); the Benedictine abbey above town is worth the ten-minute detour.
Lunch in Clervaux, then the scenic drive south through Wiltz and Esch-sur-Sûre (tiny hilltop ruin above a river bend, free, 30 minutes to walk up and around). Back to the capital by 18:00.
Practicalities
Rent from Findel or the Gare station. A compact does the loop on one tank. Roads are excellent and signage bilingual; the only slow section is the winding N7 through the Ardennes north of Ettelbruck. Combined castle admission with the LuxembourgCard (28 euros for one day, 76 for three) pays off if you’re hitting four or more in 48 hours.

Can I do this castle loop without a car?
Vianden, Clervaux and Bourscheid are all reachable by train plus rural bus, but chaining them in a weekend by public transport is punishing. Rent a car — this is the route that most rewards driving.
Which single castle should I pick if I only do one?
Vianden. It's the most complete restoration, the setting above the Our valley is the most dramatic, and Victor Hugo's house adds a second thing to do in town.
