The free bus that most visitors miss
Bus 16 runs from Findel Airport to Gare Centrale via Kirchberg, Place Hamilius and Central Station in 25 to 30 minutes. It is free, runs every 10 minutes from around 05:00 to 23:00, and stops directly outside Arrivals. There is no ticket, no app, no queue. Bus 29 is the alternative, also free, slightly slower via a different route.
For late arrivals after midnight, night bus CN1 runs on Friday and Saturday nights. Otherwise, after 23:00 you need a taxi. The Luxtram tram will eventually connect the airport directly to the city (Findel extension due 2026-2027), but as of writing you still transfer at Kirchberg-Luxexpo.
Taxis, rideshare and rental cars
Taxis from Findel to Gare Centrale run 35 to 50 euros depending on traffic and time. Colux Taxis and Webtaxi are the main operators; both accept cards and are metered. Uber does not operate in Luxembourg, and Bolt has a small, unreliable presence. Do not expect ride-hailing; use Webtaxi's app instead.
Rental car pickup is at the airport terminal with Hertz, Europcar, Sixt and Avis. If your trip is city-focused, skip the car: parking in Ville Haute costs 2 euros per hour, garages are 25 to 40 euros per day, and traffic on the Kirchberg plateau at rush hour is genuinely grim. Rent only for Vianden, Mullerthal or Moselle day trips.
Questions, answered
How long does bus 16 really take to the old town?
Twenty-five minutes to Place Hamilius (top of Ville Haute), 30 to 35 to Gare Centrale. Add 5 minutes in weekday rush hour.
Is there a train from the airport?
No. The nearest train station is Sandweiler-Contern, 4 km away, and not practical. Bus is the answer.
