The good: transport and modern infrastructure
Public transport is genuinely accessible. Every tram on the Kirchberg-to-Stadbredimus line has level boarding and dedicated wheelchair spaces. Buses are low-floor with ramps, and drivers deploy them without fuss. Trains from Gare Centrale to Ettelbruck, Esch and Trier have accessible carriages, though smaller rural stations may need advance notice via CFL's Mobilitéitszentral (call 24 hours ahead on 2465 2465).
Museums are strong: Mudam, MNHA, the Musée Dräi Eechelen and the Philharmonie on Kirchberg all have full step-free access, accessible toilets and lifts. Modern hotels on Kirchberg and near the airport are built to current EU accessibility standards. Newer restaurants in Cloche d’Or also work well.
The hard part: old town cobbles and elevation
Ville Haute and Grund were built on a plateau and a river valley connected by cliffs. The historic centre has cobbled streets that vibrate wheelchairs and rattle canes. Four tools help: the free Pfaffenthal panoramic lift (24/7, wheelchair-accessible, drops you 71 metres in 30 seconds), the Grund elevator at Plateau du Saint-Esprit, the funicular between Pfaffenthal and Kirchberg, and step-free tram access along Avenue de la Liberté.
The Bock Casemates and Vianden Castle are largely inaccessible due to spiral staircases and medieval terrain. Bock has a viewing platform accessible from Rue Sigefroi but not the tunnels. Vianden offers a chairlift to the castle terrace but the interior circuit involves stairs. Mondorf-les-Bains spa is fully accessible.

Are taxis wheelchair-accessible?
A limited fleet exists through Colux Taxis and Webtaxi; book at least 2 hours ahead. Regular taxis are standard sedans and cannot carry a non-folding wheelchair.
Do hotels have accessible rooms?
Larger properties on Kirchberg, at the airport and international chains reliably do. Boutique hotels in Ville Haute and Grund often occupy heritage buildings without lifts; ask before booking.
