The most atmospheric neighbourhood
Grund sits at the bottom of the cliffs, along a bend of the Alzette. You reach it by the free Pfaffenthal panoramic lift from Ville Haute (running until midnight) or by walking down Montée du Grund. The neighbourhood is essentially one street of stone houses, an abbey, and about a dozen bars and restaurants. At night, the lit casemates above you feel unreal.
Where to stay and eat
La Pipistrelle (€208) is the only real hotel — five suites, book six weeks ahead. Otherwise, base in Ville Haute and eat in Grund. Mousel\'s Cantine does hearty Luxembourgish (Bouneschlupp bean soup, €10) in a former brewery. Scott\'s Pub is the expat institution. For serious dining, Ma Langue Sourit and Um Plateau, though the latter is technically up the hill. On weekends the strip fills with 20-somethings until 3am — pick your room accordingly.

The Pfaffenthal Panoramic Lift is free and runs 5:45am-1am. It\'s a 71-metre glass elevator with a view — a small attraction in itself.
Is Grund noisy at night?
Weekends yes, weeknights no. La Pipistrelle rooms face away from the pub strip.
