The free-transport reality
All buses, trams and second-class trains inside Luxembourg are free — no ticket, just board. First-class trains cost €4 a leg. Trains to Trier (Germany), Metz (France) and Arlon (Belgium) require a ticket at the border. The tram runs Kirchberg-Old Town-Gare every 6 minutes, 5:30am-midnight. Trains run 5am-11pm to Vianden (via Ettelbruck) and Echternach (bus from station).
When you actually need a car
Mullerthal Trail\'s remote sections, small Moselle villages between Remich and Wormeldange, and any evening arrival after 9pm at a rural hotel — those are the three cases. Rental cars from Luxembourg airport start at €39 a day. Fuel is around €2 a litre for petrol. Parking in the capital is the pain, not the driving.
The bike option
Luxembourg has 675 km of national cycle routes, and Vél\'OH bike-share in the capital costs €2 a day for unlimited 30-minute rides. The PC15 route follows the Moselle for 42 km from Wasserbillig to Schengen — flat, riverside, one of Europe\'s underrated rides.
