The reputation vs the reality
Gare has a rougher edge than the rest of Luxembourg City — a handful of streets around Rue de Strasbourg and Rue de Bonnevoie have visible drug and sex work, mostly at night. That said: it\'s still a wealthy European capital, violent crime is very rare, and the northern half of Gare (near Place de Paris and Avenue de la Liberté) is completely fine. Solo travellers report feeling safer here than in most European station districts.
Where to sleep smart
Ibis Styles Gare (€91), Hotel Best Western Plus International (€113), and Park Inn (€104) are the reliable picks on Place de la Gare itself. Avoid the cheapest options on Rue Joseph Junck — that\'s the red-light strip. Adagio Aparthotel on Boulevard d\'Avranches is my top value pick at €134 for a full apartment.
Getting out
The free tram from Gare hits Ville Haute in 8 minutes. Trains to Vianden (change at Ettelbruck), Echternach (via bus from station), and Trier in Germany all leave from here. If you\'re doing day trips, Gare is functionally the best base.
