The top three

1. The Wenzel Walk. A 100-minute city-run circuit that starts at the Bock, drops through Pfaffenthal, follows the Alzette and climbs back via the Rham plateau. The best single walk in the country because it stitches together a thousand years of fortification in one loop. 2. The Corniche to Grund descent. Not really a hike — twenty minutes — but the sequence of views as you leave the ramparts and drop into the lower town is unmatched. 3. The Vauban Walk, the Wenzel's northern cousin, taking in Clausen, the Trois Tours and the Pfaffenthal lift.

4. The Petrusse valley loop from the Adolphe Bridge along the park below to the Bock and back via the old town. Roughly an hour, mostly flat, dog-friendly and quiet on weekday mornings. 5. Kirchberg architecture walk from Philharmonie past the European Court of Justice, Mudam and the Coque swimming complex — not scenic in a traditional sense, but the best hour of contemporary architecture in the country. Add the panoramic lift at either end and you’ve cheated on the elevation.
