The top three
1. Schiessentümpel waterfall. A three-cascade fall over sandstone with a stone bridge above it — the single most photographed spot in the region and a short walk from the Consdorf-Müllerthal road. 2. The Wolfsschlucht (Wolf Gorge) near Berdorf, a slot canyon you squeeze through between mossy sandstone walls. Part of Trail Route 2. 3. Echternach itself: the basilica of St Willibrord, the abbey and the Roman villa foundations under the modern museum. Base yourself here for one night if you can.
The next four
4. The Perekop, a narrow rock cleft near Berdorf where you climb a ladder up through a fissure — brief, memorable, free. 5. Beaufort castles (both of them) with a Cassero blackcurrant tasting at the distillery. 6. Larochette village and its ruined castle, a good coffee stop between the capital and the deeper Mullerthal. 7. A stretch of the Mullerthal Trail — Route 2 between Berdorf and Echternach is the highlights reel if you only have four hours. The full trail is 112 km and takes most people five days.
Questions, answered
Do I need hiking boots?
Trainers work for Schiessentümpel and the villages. For Wolfsschlucht, Perekop or any Trail Route 2 section, proper boots — the sandstone gets slick and there are ladders and roots.
Can I do the Mullerthal without a car?
Just about. Bus 111 links Luxembourg City to Echternach, and bus 414 connects Echternach with Berdorf and Consdorf. Frequencies are hourly at best, so plan around the timetable.
Doing good is the business: every booking through Stay Luxembourg funds one verified tonne of carbon removal — same room, same price, no markup.
