The 5 best neighbourhoods to stay in Luxembourg City, ranked

Five areas that make sense for a visitor, in order of who they actually suit.

Grund lower town rooftops

The top three

1. Ville Haute. If it's your first trip, stay here. Everything walkable, the Corniche two minutes from your door, the free tram at Hamilius. Hotels are pricey (Le Place d’Armes, Le Royal) but the location earns it. 2. Gare. The station district is where the value hotels cluster, tram and every train run through it, and the food scene has actually improved. Skip the two blocks immediately north of the station at night; the rest is fine. 3. Grund. Only two or three small hotels down here, but if you can get one you sleep in the postcard.

The other two

4. Kirchberg. Business district — big-brand hotels (Sofitel, Melia, Novotel) at chain prices, glass towers, easy tram to the centre. Stay here if you’re at a conference or want a pool and gym, not for atmosphere. 5. Clausen and Pfaffenthal. A handful of apartment rentals and one or two guesthouses in the lower town along the Alzette, with the panoramic lift connecting you to the old town in three minutes. Quieter, prettier, less choice. Belair and Limpertsberg are fine residential areas but there's no real reason to sleep there as a tourist.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Where should families stay?

Kirchberg for the pool-and-space option (and the Coque aquatic centre nearby), or Ville Haute apartments for walkability. Avoid the immediate station area with young children at night.

Is Grund noisy?

The bars along the Alzette get loud on Friday and Saturday until about 1am. Midweek it's silent. Rooms facing the river get more noise than those facing the cliffs.
