Free on Wednesday evenings. 2. MNHA — National Museum of History and Art on Marché-aux-Poissons. Six floors from Neolithic flints through Gallo-Roman mosaics to 20th-century Luxembourg painters; the Roman rooms are the standout. 3. The National Museum of Military History in Diekirch, the definitive account of the Battle of the Bulge on Luxembourgish soil, with life-size dioramas that hit harder than any panel text.

4. Villa Vauban, the municipal fine-arts museum in a walled park a short walk from the old town; small, quiet, strong Dutch Golden Age holdings. 5. The Family of Man at Clervaux Castle, Edward Steichen's 1955 photography exhibition permanently installed since 1994 and UNESCO-listed. Worth the train ride north. 6. MNHN — the natural history museum in Grund, best if you have children but the geology floor stands up for adults too. Skip the wax museum in Vianden; the castle itself is the exhibit.

Which museum is best in bad weather?
Mudam and MNHA are both large enough to fill three or four hours, and the free tram links Kirchberg to Ville Haute in fifteen minutes.
